Basin and leaf care

The basin

• Mulch the basin with shredded leaves, male flowers and empty fruit bunches.
• Don't plough in the basin: it cuts the feeding roots.
• No chemical sprays on rainy days.

Leaves

• Keep 35–40 leaves in the crown and prune lightly. Don't cut or tie green leaves.

Young palms

• Remove flowers (ablation) for the first 3 years so the palm grows strong.
• Grow sunhemp in the basin as green manure while palms are young.
